Things are heating up at the RomaTrial e.V. office: Our phones are ringing around the clock, keyboards are clattering, and spreadsheets are overflowing. We are right in the thick of preparations for COMMON TONGUE II – International Roma Theater Festival!
While hatred and agitation are spreading, we are creating space for encounters, visibility, and self-determination. For the second time, we are inviting Roma* ensembles from across Europe to bring their stories, everyday worlds, and visions of the future to the stage.
For six days, Roma* ensembles from several European countries will transform the Volksbühne’s Grüner Salon into a space for empowerment and encounter. With performances ranging from political to poetic, from humorous to deeply personal, they explore memory, empowerment, and social participation.
We are celebrating a vibrant, resilient culture that has survived centuries of persecution and exclusion—and at the same time, looking forward toward visions of a fairer, common future!
The festival understands itself as a laboratory for political-artistic practice between theater, performance, and multimedia storytelling. The Roma* stories, everyday worlds, and visions of the future reveal Europe’s contradiction between ideal and reality—between enlightenment and exclusion, between human rights and migration policy.
How can memory remain alive, beyond ritualized gestures, when violence and expulsion are not a thing of the past, but of the present? What does a culture of remembrance mean under precarious conditions, when uncertainty has long since become global? In their storytelling, they open up their own archive—an archive of voices, memories, and images that seeks a language, a common language.

COMMON TONGUE II – Internationales Roma-Theaterfestival

Im Büro von RomaTrial e.V. geht es heiß her: Wir sind mitten in der Vorbereitung für COMMON TONGUE II – Internationales Roma-Theaterfestival!
Denn während Hass und Hetze um sich greifen, schaffen wir Raum für Begegnung, Sichtbarkeit und Selbstbestimmung. Zum zweiten Mal laden wir Roma*-Ensembles aus mehrere Länder Europas ein, ihre Geschichten, Alltagswelten und Zukunftsbilder auf die Bühne zu bringen.
Sechs Tage lang verwandeln Roma*-Ensembles aus mehreren Ländern Europas den Grünen Salon der Volksbühne in einen Raum für Empowerment und Begegnung. Ihre Stücke handeln von Erinnerung, Selbstermächtigung und gesellschaftlicher Teilhabe – kritisch, poetisch, konfrontativ und humorvoll.
Wir feiern eine pulsierende, widerständige Kultur, die jahrhundertelange Verfolgung und Ausgrenzung überlebt hat – und richten zugleich den Blick nach vorne: auf Visionen für eine gerechtere, gemeinsame Zukunft!
Das Festival versteht sich als Labor für die politisch-künstlerische Praxis zwischen Theater, Performance und multimedialen Storytelling. Die Roma*-Geschichten, Alltagswelten und Zukunftsbilder offenbaren Europas Widerspruch zwischen Ideal und Wirklichkeit – zwischen Aufklärung und Ausgrenzung, zwischen Menschenrechten und Migrationspolitik.
Wie kann Erinnerung lebendig bleiben, jenseits ritualisierter Gesten, wenn Gewalt und Vertreibung nicht der Vergangenheit, sondern der Gegenwart angehören? Was heißt Erinnerungskultur unter prekären Bedingungen, wenn Unsicherheit längst global ist? Im Erzählen öffnen sie ihr eigenes Archiv – ein Archiv aus Stimmen, Erinnerungen und Bildern, das nach einer Sprache sucht, nach einer gemeinsamen Sprache.
