Things are heating up at the RomaTrial e.V. office: Our phones are ringing around the clock, keyboards are clattering, and spreadsheets are overflowing. We are right in the thick of preparations for COMMON TONGUE II – International Roma Theater Festival!
While hatred and agitation are spreading, we are creating space for solidarity, visibility, and self-determination. For the second time, we are inviting Roma* ensembles from across Europe to bring their stories, everyday worlds, and visions of the future to the stage.
For six days, we will search for a language against fear, powerlessness, and loneliness, celebrating a vibrant, resilient culture that has survived centuries of persecution and exclusion—and at the same time, looking forward toward visions of a fairer, more solidaristic future!
The themes awaiting us are as diverse as they are timely: memory and resistance, migration and belonging, climate justice, and everyday solidarity. Sometimes critical and political, sometimes poetic and humorous—each performance brings its own language, energy, and perspective.
But before we take over the stage in Berlin, we will spend four days in the peaceful countryside of Brandenburg: there, the ensembles will discuss, rehearse, and connect. It is here that the special energy is created which makes COMMON TONGUE far more than a festival—a space for empowerment, encounter, and creativity!

COMMON TONGUE II – Internationales Roma-Theaterfestival

Im Büro von RomaTrial e.V. geht es heiß her: Unsere Telefone klingeln rund um die Uhr, die Tastaturen glühen, die Tabellen quellen über: Wir sind mitten in der heißen Phase der Vorbereitung für COMMON TONGUE II – Internationales Roma-Theaterfestival!
Denn während Hass und Hetze um sich greifen, schaffen wir Raum für Solidarität, Sichtbarkeit und Selbstbestimmung. Zum zweiten Mal laden wir Roma*-Ensembles aus ganz Europa ein, ihre Geschichten, Alltagswelten und Zukunftsbilder auf die Bühne zu bringen.
Sechs Tage lang suchen wir nach einer Sprache gegen Angst, Ohnmacht und Einsamkeit, und feiern eine pulsierende, widerständige Kultur, die jahrhundertelange Verfolgung und Ausgrenzung überlebt hat – und richten zugleich den Blick nach vorne: auf Visionen für eine gerechtere, solidarische Zukunft!
Die Themen, die uns erwarten, sind so vielfältig wie aktuell: Erinnerungskultur und Widerstand, Migration und Zugehörigkeit, Klimagerechtigkeit und Solidarität im Alltag. Mal kritisch und politisch, mal poetisch und humorvoll – jedes Stück bringt seine eigene Sprache, Energie und Perspektive mit.
Aber bevor wir die Bühne in Berlin erobern, treffen wir uns vier Tage lang in der ländlichen Ruhe in Brandenburg: Dort diskutieren, proben und vernetzen sich die Ensemble, dort entsteht die besondere Energie, die COMMON TONGUE zu weit mehr als einem Festival macht – zu einem Ort für Empowerment, Begegnung und Kreativität!
