COMMON TONGUE II – International Roma Theater Festival

Eighty years after the Holocaust, Roma* and Sinti* remain largely invisible in Europe’s historical narrative. For centuries, the voices and experiences of Roma* and Sinti* have been marginalized—and even today, antiziganism manifests itself in exclusion, prejudice, and violence. Roma* and Sinti* are a living part of Europe, yet their presence remains uncertain in many places and is overshadowed by stereotypes.
The festival COMMON TONGUE II attempts to fill these gaps with stories of solidarity, self-determination, and visibility. For six days, Roma* ensembles from several European countries will transform the Volksbühne’s Grüner Salon into a space for empowerment and encounter. With performances ranging from political to poetic, from humorous to deeply personal, they explore memory, empowerment, and social participation.
Theater as a space for memory, resistance and future
The festival understands itself as a laboratory for political-artistic practice between theater, performance, and multimedia storytelling. The Roma* stories, everyday worlds, and visions of the future reveal Europe’s contradiction between ideal and reality—between enlightenment and exclusion, between human rights and migration policy.
What does belonging and home mean in a Europe that is closing its borders? How can memory remain alive, beyond ritualized gestures, when violence and expulsion are not a thing of the past, but of the present?
What does a culture of remembrance mean under precarious conditions, when uncertainty has long since become global? And how are the climate crisis and social justice intertwined in a world that has lost its balance? In their storytelling, they open up their own archive—an archive of voices, memories, and images that seeks a language against fear, powerlessness, and loneliness.
Theater as a space for empowerment, encounter, and creativity
COMMON TONGUE II invites us to search for a common language and at the same time to ask what a common language could be.

COMMON TONGUE II – Internationales Roma-Theaterfestival

Achtzig Jahre nach dem Holocaust sind Roma* und Sinti* in der historischen Erzählung Europas nach wie vor weitgehend unsichtbar. Über Jahrhunderte hinweg wurden die Stimmen und Erfahrungen von Roma* und Sinti* marginalisiert – und auch heute zeigt sich Antiziganismus in Ausgrenzung, Vorurteilen und Gewalt. Roma* und Sinti* sind ein lebendiger Teil Europas, doch ihre Präsenz bleibt vielerorts unsicher und wird von Stereotypen überschattet.
Das Festival COMMON TONGUE II versucht diese Leerstellen mit Erzählungen von Solidarität, Selbstbestimmung und Sichtbarkeit zu füllen. Sechs Tage lang verwandeln Roma*-Ensembles aus mehreren Ländern Europas den Grünen Salon der Volksbühne in einen Raum für Empowerment und Begegnung. Ihre Stücke handeln von Erinnerung, Selbstermächtigung und gesellschaftlicher Teilhabe – kritisch, poetisch, konfrontativ und humorvoll.
Theater als Raum für Erinnerung, Widerstand und Zukunft
Das Festival versteht sich als Labor für die politisch-künstlerische Praxis zwischen Theater, Performance und multimedialen Storytelling. Die Roma*-Geschichten, Alltagswelten und Zukunftsbilder offenbaren Europas Widerspruch zwischen Ideal und Wirklichkeit – zwischen Aufklärung und Ausgrenzung, zwischen Menschenrechten und Migrationspolitik.
Was bedeutet Zugehörigkeit und Heimat in einem Europa, das Grenzen schließt? Wie kann Erinnerung lebendig bleiben, jenseits ritualisierter Gesten, wenn Gewalt und Vertreibung nicht der Vergangenheit, sondern der Gegenwart angehören? Was heißt Erinnerungskultur unter prekären Bedingungen, wenn Unsicherheit längst global ist? Und wie sind Klimakrise und soziale Gerechtigkeit miteinander verwoben in einer Welt, die aus dem Gleichgewicht geraten ist? Im Erzählen öffnen sie ihr eigenes Archiv – ein Archiv aus Stimmen, Erinnerungen und Bildern, das nach einer Sprache sucht gegen Angst, Ohnmacht und Einsamkeit.
Theater als Raum für Empowerment, Begegnung und Kreativität
COMMON TONGUE II lädt ein, nach einer gemeinsamen Sprache zu suchen – und zugleich zu fragen, was eine gemeinsame Sprache sein könnte.
