The catalog GYPSYLAND documents the retrospective of the life’s work of Damian Le Bas, which was presented on the occasion of the First Roma Biennale with the title COME OUT NOW!, shown at the Maxim Gorki Theater in April 2018.

Damian Le Bas’ GYPSYLAND EUROPE is a world without borders, “constrained by neither limitations nor boundaries, flexible in thought, positive in enabling abilities that reinterprets the negative into positivity” (Delaine Le Bas).

Memories and letters from people who played an important role in Damian Le Bas’ life, maps, globes and cartographies, archival photographs, Gypsy Dada, objects, sketchbooks from the 1980s, and archive footage from his studio document “something heavy Damian lifted up again and again“:

“Not just the weight of mostly unresponsive cultural commentators, but also the curtain of silence that hides the injustice and inhumanity of our age” (Alex Michon).

The retrospective GYPSYLAND was part of COME OUT NOW! 1st Roma Biennale, a project by RomaTrial e.V., Maxim Gorki Theater and Studio Я for the Alliance for Solidarity with the Sinti and Roma of Europe, supported by the Hauptstadtkulturfonds. With the kind support of Collegium Hungaricum Berlin. The retrospective GYPSYLAND took place in cooperation with the Allianz Kulturstiftung.
